Food Recipes you can use even when you have 'Nothing in the House'

We have all been there and said it, and even more so while we self-quarantine and restrict our visits to the grocery stores and restaurants. However, we have compiled a bunch of foods you can easily make even while having a limited amount of ingredients in our house. Most of these recipes need only two or three household ingredients you are bound to have, like flour, butter, milk (an absolute must) and water. Using our recipes, you are definitely going to impress your family with five-star restaurant worthy dishes.

1. White Sauce Pasta

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 cup milk of your choice

  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour

  • Salt to your taste

  • Pepper

  • Pasta of your choice (Suggested : Macaroni, Penne or Cavatappi)

  • Optional: 1/8 teaspoon red chilli powder/red chilli flakes

  • Optional: Basil leaves or oregano

Procedure

  • Start by taking a medium sized pan and place it over medium heat.

  • Add the butter to the pan.

  • Wait for around 5 minutes for the butter to melt completely.

  • Next, add the all-purpose flour and give the mixture a stir until the butter and flour are well incorporated.

  • When the mixture starts to thicken, add the milk and continue whisking the sauce.

  • After approximately 3 minutes, the mixture will have the consistency of a sauce. (Pro-tip: If the mixture is too thick, gradually add milk. If the milk is too thin, add more all-purpose flour.)

  • Add pepper and salt to your taste. (Optional: Add the red chilli powder or flakes as well as the basil/oregano leaves too)

  • Add cooked pasta to the sauce and mix everything really well until the pasta is coated with the sauce.

  • Your pasta is done! Who knew that the white sauce pasta wasn't all about cheese? And who knew that you could make your own delectable sauce using basic household ingredients without even having to step out of the house? Plate the pasta and enjoy!

2. Blueberry syrup

Ingredients

  • 2 cups blueberries

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/4 cup water

  • Optional: 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Procedure

  • Start by taking a medium sized pan and place it over medium heat.

  • Add the blueberries, sugar and water to the pan in that order. (Optional: add the lemon juice)

  • The compote (fancy word for fruit cooked in syrup) will take 6-8 minutes to thicken to a syrup consistency. Make sure to stir occasionally as well.

  • Your blueberry syrup is ready! You can pour it over pancakes if you don't have maple syrup or you can spread it over bread like a jam. I like to pour it over ice cream, but unfortunately, that has become more of a rarity these days. If you want, you can just have the syrup by itself. It looks too good to eat though, with the lovely deep plum color!

3. Microwave Potato Chips

Ingredients

  • 1 potato

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Salt to your taste

Procedure

  • Start by taking your potato and use a slicer or a knife to cut it into 1/8 inch slices.

  • Use a paper towel to remove starch and moisture from the potato slices.

  • Coat the potato slices in olive oil and mix until fully incorporated.

  • Wipe a microwave safe plate down with olive oil so the potato chips don't stick to the plate.

  • Arrange the potato chips on top of the plate. Make sure they are not touching each other.

  • Sprinkle with salt to your taste. (Optional : You can add pepper or flavor combinations to your taste)

  • Place them in the microwave for four minutes.

  • You're done! And you didn't even need an oven or an air-fryer!

4. Caramel Croutons

Ingredients

  • 6-8 slices of bread

  • 2 tablespoons salted butter

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla essence (Optional, but recommended)

  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda

Procedure

  • Start by cutting your bread slices into cubes roughly the size of a crouton

  • Add the cubes into a medium sized pan on low heat.

  • Toast the cubes until they are crispy.

  • In a separate pan, add the sugar and butter.

  • Mix well until both elements completely melt.

  • Add baking soda and stir. (Optional: Add the vanilla essence)

  • Add the bread cubes into the pan and coat well until the mixture is completely absorbed by the bread cubes. (Pro-tip: Watch over the pan at all times. The bread cubes can burn quite easily.)

  • Let the bread cubes cool completely and you're done! Enjoy!
